Persian Language is also known as Farsi and it is mainly spoken in Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Persian belongs to the Western branch of the Iranian family of Indo-European languages which also includes Kurdish, Gilaki, Mazandarani, Talyshi, and Baluchi. Persian language is the most widely spoken member of the Iranian branch of the Indo-Iranian languages and a sub-family of the Indo-European languages. Throughout the world there are approximately 110 million speakers of Persian language. The Persian language is also known by several names: Farsi, Tajiki in Tajikistan, Dari in Afghanistan. Native Iranian Persian speakers call it Farsi.


The language has been written with a number of different scripts, including the Aramaic, Avestan, Cyrillic, Old Persian Cuneiform, Pahlavi and Latin alphabets. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, in the mid-16th century the term Persian as a language name was first provided in English. Along with the Kumzari, Larestani, and Luri languages the Persian language is in the Southwestern Iranian group. It is the language of Iran (formerly Persia) and is also widely spoken in Afghanistan and in an archaic form in Tajikistan and the Pamir Mountain region. Total numbers of speakers of Persian are approximately 2 million Dari Persian speakers in Pakistan and over 40 million Farsi speakers about 60% of Iran’s population. According to CIA World Fact Book & Britannica over 14 million Dari Persian speakers are in Afghanistan and about 50% of the population and historically the range of speaking Persian language areas is from the Middle East to India but today Persian language is understood in parts of Armenia, Azerbaijan, India, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan and Turkey.
