About Slovak Language
The Slovak language is spoken by approximately 7 million people all around the world, and most the Slovak speaking people residing in Slovakia. Many other Eastern European countries also have a large number of Slovak speakers including Bulgaria and Croatia, and also by some immigrant groups in the United States and Canada.
Western Slavic language classification include the Slovak language, and is a part of the Indo-European language of families. In the 6th century AD, the Slavic peoples resettled throughout the Eastern europe after migrating from Old Poland, resulting in the division of the Slavic language into three categories: Western, Eastern and Southern. The Slovak language mainly developed from the Western group, along with Czech, Polish, and Sorbian.
Until the 11th century the Czech and Slovak languages remained the same, not undergoing any further significant development, the regional Slavic dialects in the area then were known as Moravia (the present-day Czech Republic and Slovakia) began to morph into distinct languages.
The dissolution of Czechoslovakia in the year 1993 did not lead to any major linguistic developments in both the Czech and Slovak languages, and the two remain mutually intelligible, meaning that the speakers of Slovak language can understand Czech and vice-versa.
Since the 16th century both Czech and Slovak languages have not undergone any significant development, apart from the increased range of vocabulary. Like Czech, the Slovak language is also distinct from many other Slavic languages in the fact that the accent, or stress, is always placed on the first syllable of a word. Apart from some exceptions to this in some Slovak dialects but compared to each other, the present Czech and Slovak languages have very little differences in pronunciation and syntax.
In the 16th century first signs of the national Slovak literature were found, and were primarily written in Latin. Topics of Slovak works from this time contain religious issues and topics of antiquity based on ancient Greek and Roman tales.
Until the mid-19th century, a written from of Czech language was used by both Czech and Slovak speakers. In the mid-1800s, however, based on the dialect that were spoken in central Slovakia a totally different form of Slovak literary language was developed. In 1783, the first Slovak language adventure novel, the “René mládenca príhodi a skúsenosti” was published.
